Where robust and established Open Source technologies exist, we use Open Source code. Whenever Open Source code is used, we do a review of the code to ensure its quality.
It is a strategic decision to be involved in open source projects. Both by using the best of open source and contributing back by improving and maintaining the software as a part of the community. We truly believe that this lead to better products, higher level of learning and bringing the technology forwards.
Mobiletech will consider open-sourcing parts of the product family in the future, to further improve the quality of the products, but there are no definite plans in this regard for moment.
Mobiletech and WURFL
Mobiletech has been, and will continue to be, committed to the free WURFL device description repository (DDR) and the WURFL community. We work closely with them by contributing enhancements and device data back to the community. WURFL’s main strength is that it is a community driven effort where the members’ high levels of expertise ensure that WURFL is constantly updated and maintained. It is our firm belief that this is the best and most cost-effective alternative for our customers. We further believe that the competitive advantage is not in the DDR alone. A DDR has become a necessity in order to exist in the mobile service business today, and it will be difficult for one party alone to maintain a DDR at the required standard. Mobiletech’s competitive advantage is the design of the mobile services, which is based on extensive knowledge of the mobile channel. Our knowledge regarding devices and capabilities is submitted to the WURFL community on a regular basis.
Mobiletech will continue to build commercial Mobile solutions based on WURFL providing our customers with added value, as an alternative to the OpenSource WALL offering.
Recently, Mobiletech has taken a active role in the effort to include new features in WURFL, such as AJAX and enhanced multimedia support, by moderating and administering the new wurflajax project together with Luca Passani, the founder of wurfl. See http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wurflajax/.
